  1. Between the 1970s and 1990s the USDA documented a 30% average decline in magnesium in foods. This was likely due to the industrial production of food which has strip mined the topsoil, only replaced the nitrogen, potassium and potash with its NPK synthetic fertilizers and hybridization which has not selected for nutrients. The decline has been going on longer: a 1940s study showed much higher levels and trace minerals that are now absent and an apple a day in the 1920s is the mineral equivalent of 26 apples a day today.

    However magnesium is vital to human functioning, being used in the construction of enzymes that ferry things in and out of the cells. In one Canadian study bipolar disease was successfully treated using magnesium alone. Tremors, muscle pain, stiffness, restless leg, diabetes and depression are among the many conditions that respond well to magnesium supplementation. Magnesium is more essential to osteoporosis in most women, but the supplement manufacturers usually have more calcium than magnesium and it reduces magnesium absorption.

    Magnesium in pill or capsule form is difficult to absorb, period- most of it goes right through you. Liquid ionic magnesium on the other hand is easier to absorb. It tastes terrible, slightly bitter and mineral-salty, although a chaser of V8 can help.
